In All the Rage, Courtney Summers hits so many nails squarely on their heads that her careful storytelling becomes a subtle and frightening entity. As we’re introduced to Romy’s life, it’s clear that the sinister tendrils of hatred, arrogance, misogyny, and bigotry have run deep into the heart of the community where she lives. Things have not gone well for her, and people are cruel.Romy has rituals that help to calm her body and center her mind before she leaves the house. You witness her careful skirting of people and places, to avoid confrontations. To avoid reminders of past confrontations. You see her reluctance to get close to people, to open up to people, but understand her innate desire for connection all the same.Maybe you’ll be as confused as her mother — or her co-workers at the diner, or the boy she might like — as her actions don’t seem to match up with her words, or she fails to explain why she wants (needs) things to be a certain way. Maybe you’ll be frustrated like I was, when she doesn’t respond to a *good person* the way that you think she should. But that is SO MUCH of what All the Rage IS. It is about the frustration, the confusion, the lack of (or misdirected) compassion that Romy experiences. (And she’s not alone.) It’s about the blatant ways that people hurt each other, yes. But more than that, it’s about the subtle, insidious ways that we hurt each other. You see it in how nobody listens to Romy, nobody believes Romy, and everyone is ready to accuse Romy at the drop of a hat. It’s about how this specter haunts us all, subtly and obviously all at once. Every day. All around us. It is, indeed, ALL THE RAGE.

First of all, that summary is misleading and you should ignore it completely. focus on Romy and what she has to say. focus on what she doesn't say, on what she does, on her pain and how the outside (people, reactions, treatment of a person, etc) can so easily destroy a girl. listen.Don't focus on whether she's 'likable' or not, that's beyond the point. you don't need to like someone to believe their story or to hear to what they have to say, to know how important it is to listen. This book is important, necessary and devastating. why? because it happens. This happens to girls all over the world, constantly. girls get raped (right now we are talking specifically about girls ok, let us have this), girls get blamed and shamed and silenced, and it keeps happening, it keeps happening and no one says anything. we just watch it happen over and over again. When is it going to stop?Summers drives the point home. Her narration is ruthless because it needs to be, so people will listen. ALL THE RAGE is gritty, dark and it doesn't back down because we owe our girls that much. we owe them. listen to their stories, start with this book and don't just stay there. believe our girls. our girls are dying. rape culture, sexism and misogyny are killing them and it's not fair.I love that Summers chose to tell this story, and how she told it. What I love even more is that she didn't stop there, she helped with TO THE GIRLS campaign. because they need it, we need it (i highly recommend going through the messages after you read the book).I love that Summers didn't sugarcoat any of the horrible ways people react to survivor's stories, not as a way to tell the story, but because it's this awful, and we need to realize it and actually do something about it.This was a story that needed to be told, and i'm so glad it's getting out there. READ IT.Listen.Don't let them get away with it.

We're really, really tired of being told we're worth nothing. I'm tired of it. I'm tired of worrying that a teen girl who comes in my library has something to fear from another guy in the place because he thinks it's funny or cool or just his right to ogle her because of her body. I'm tired of girls thinking that they need to change or hide their bodies because they are too big or too small or too curvy or too straight or too anything. And heaven forbid that what a girl says is taken seriously. We all know that it's all for attention, amirite, guyz? All the Rage is about rape, yes, but it's also about being silenced, about abuse of power, about prejudice, and about what it's really like to grow up female. The night of Wake Lake, the annual seniors' bash, Romy's ex-best friend Penny disappears. Romy leaves work and goes to Wake Lake too, waking up on the side of the road with "RAPE ME" written in red lipstick--her special color of lipstick--written across her pelvis. She doesn't remember anything. Was she really that drunk? Why did she go? What happened to Penny? Penny, the golden girl? Penny, who was perfect. The cops organize fleets of officers to search the area. Concerned citizens form task forces. And kids at school cry and wail "in way they never would for me. This is what happens when a girl befalls a fate no one thinks she deserves."Tina, another popular girl, mocks Romy in the locker room, because it feels so good to inflict pain. " 'So you think she was raped before she was in the water?' Cold. I'm cold. I don't feel the floor under my feet, don't feel anything ... 'Come on, I want to hear it from you,' Tina says. 'What if she was?' 'Then she's better off dead."Romy is a walking dead girl. She's been killed multiple times: by the boy who raped her. By the friends who abandoned her. By the schoolmates who mock her. By the adults who don't believe her. By a mother who couldn't protect her. By a drunken father who left her the legacy of alcoholism and a bad name.Summers unwinds the plot like a trip wire, and her characters are so real that I think I've met them before. Or I could, somewhere or sometime in the future.Do you know what scared me the most when I finished this book? It's that Romy got to tell her story, but untold girls out there don't or can't tell theirs. They're still being silenced. They're still being called whores and sluts and being told they deserved what happened to them. And maybe they'll give up. It's time for that to stop.
